Translation Memory

The Translation Memory (TM) is at the core of SDL Trados Studio, and is a linguistic database that continually saves your translations as you work for future use.

The original language is known as the 'source' and the language that you are translating into is known as the 'target' language. These pairs are called 'Translation Units' (TUs) and are saved to re-use over and over again. This means you never have to translate the same sentence twice.

The more you add to your Translation Memory, the faster you can translate subsequent translations, as the ever-growing database provides 'matches' found in your TM. This makes you more productive, saving you time and enabling you to take on more projects.

From the moment you open Studio, you are guided through what you need to know to get translating quickly. To help new users learn how to use its features, tips, tricks and tutorial videos on how to complete translation tasks within Studio are available on-demand. For more experienced users, this provides an easy way to discover new functionality. Available in SDL Trados Studio 2019.

Tell Me

Type a word or phrase describing what you need to do in the 'Tell Me' search field and Studio intelligently suggests commands, options and settings for you to access. Clicking on a suggestion takes you directly to it — cutting out unnecessary keystrokes or searching through menus.  Available in SDL Trados Studio 2019.

AutoSuggest accelerates your translation speed through intelligent suggestions as you type. It offers you words and phrases in the target language from your TMs — including concordance search results, upLIFT Fragment Recall matches and fuzzy matches — as well as from other resources including machine translation and termbases.

Concordance searching enables you to search the translation memory for a particular word, word sequence or phrase. Translation units containing the word or phrase are found by the search and displayed in the Concordance Search window where you can see how they have been translated previously.

upLIFT Fragment Recall

upLIFT Fragment Recall delivers automatic, intelligent fragment matches from your translation memories, or sub-segment matches (for example, clauses and individual words) from your TM in both 'fuzzy' and 'no match' scenarios.  Available in SDL Trados Studio 2017 and 2019.

upLIFT Fuzzy Repair

upLIFT Fuzzy Repair intelligently uses your trusted resources to repair fuzzy matches, to save you time and get the best match possible. upLIFT Fuzzy Repair can draw from a number of translation sources to perform fuzzy match repair including; machine translation, termbases, legacy and new translation memories. Available in SDL Trados Studio 2017 and 2019.

The translation alignment tool matches, from previously translated documents, the source and target language files side-by-side to determine which pairs belong together. This creates powerful translation memories from any file type.

PerfectMatch allows you to leverage previously translated bilingual files. It imports the segments and adds them in-context as 100% matches which are locked as approved translations.

Translations can be bookmarked as you work by marking or commenting on any segment. Bookmarks are easy to manage through a separate window, and translators and reviewers can jump to the last edited segment when they open a bilingual file.

Upgrade legacy Translation Memories

Within Studio you will find an easy-to-use upgrade wizard that simplifies the process of upgrading legacy Translation Memories (for example TMW, TTX, TMX, ITD) for use in SDL Trados Studio.

Terminology Management

Accurate and consistent terminology creates high quality translations, increases productivity by reducing translation rework and helps translation teams to be more cost-efficient. The most sophisticated terminology solution in the industry, SDL MultiTerm, is included for free when you purchase SDL Trados Studio. SDL MultiTerm can be used as a standalone application or as part of SDL Trados Studio.

SDL Language Cloud Terminology is our easy-to-use terminology management solution in the cloud which is also available from within Studio 2019 with the Service Release 1, for free, or through an annual subscription where termbases can additionally be shared, and imported and exported to and from Excel. Contact us for more information about managing terminology in the cloud.

Translation Memory editing and maintenance

Keeping your Translation Memories (TMs) in the best possible condition assures high quality translations. In Studio's TM view, you can examine up to 1000 Translation Units (TUs) per page and quickly navigate to a specific area in your TM. This makes it easy to do any required edits and keep your most prized assets up-to-date with the latest, most accurate translations. Available in SDL Trados Studio 2019.

Language specific QA checking

Studio's automated quality assurance (QA) checker highlights potential language errors including punctuation, terminology and inconsistencies. Customize the QA settings for each language pair you work with to increase flexibility and control over QA checks. Available in SDL Trados Studio 2019.

In-context QA reports

There are various settings which you can configure to run a QA check and show the errors you want to flag up in a report. Studio can create a report showing you any errors in context with the source and target segment, so you can see why there is an error. By clicking on the segment number you can quickly skip to each segment of the file to correct the errors.

File type filters and settings

To help make the translation process as simple as possible, SDL remain committed to providing Studio users with the most extensive file format support available. This includes support for the widest range of file formats of any CAT tool, including scanned PDF documents.

File type preview

Preview your documents before creating a new translation project using custom or in-built file filters directly from the File Types window – saving time when testing your file types.

Bilingual Excel support

Studio can easily process and recognize multilingual content found within Microsoft® Excel files. Simply specify which columns of the spreadsheet contain the source and target text.

PDF OCR Reader

Easily translate scanned PDFs using Studio's default Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Solid Documents, or download the free IRIS OCR plugin from the SDL AppStore for extended support in over 130 different languages.

Merging segments

Ensure your source text is correct by easily merging segments together — even across paragraphs.

Edit source segments

Make quick edits to the source text to fix, for example, a spelling mistake or incorrectly scanned characters.

Spell checking and AutoCorrect

Enjoy greater speed and accuracy with automatic spell-checking and error correction. This works in exactly the same way as Microsoft® Word.

Apply text formatting, tags, placeables and variable elements such as numbers, dates and times to the text in your target language.

Real-time preview

For common file types, you can easily generate a preview of your document to see how your translation is looking as you type.

During any stage of the translation process, quickly merge any number of files into a single file.

Advanced Display Filters

Speed up your review with customizable display filters designed to streamline your review and sign off process.

Track Changes

Working the same way as Microsoft® Word's Track Changes, you can confidently review and easily accept or decline changes as you go, giving full review control.

Automatically update your bilingual file from a reviewed target file and import the latest changes to your TM to streamline the review process, whilst keeping your TM up-to-date.

Translation Quality Assessment (TQA)

Measure and score the quality of translations and translation suppliers for improved consistency and objectivity.

Flexible project set up

When you use a project template, setting up a project is fast with everything you need on one easy screen. For new projects, the wizard takes you through the process with a 'metro map' showing where you are in the process. You can define languages, add translation resources and refine project settings. The process is flexible allowing you to skip steps if you don't need them.

Project packages

Bundle together translation assets for your translator or reviewer into a project package that you can email. Once your translator clicks on the project package, it opens instantly into Studio with everything included so they can start translating. This helps when you have multiple translation assets or when translators share a project.

Painless mid-project updates

Changing or adding translation memories, termbases and other assets after your project is already created is easy to do in one screen. Simply open the project, update the files, details or settings, and if necessary, rerun or change the batch tasks without losing any of the translation work you've already done.

This enables maximum leverage of your translation memories. AnyTM allows you to reverse language direction, add mixed-source language documents or combine a variety of source languages to translate into one source file.

Powerful reporting provides detailed translation analysis figures including a breakdown of translation matches and where the matches come from. This provides information that feeds directly into the project planning and budgeting process.

Task sequencing

Automate and customize repetitive tasks to save time and ensure consistent project set-up. With Studio's task sequencing, it is possible to use your ideal automated series of tasks when creating a project. Apply them to project templates which can be assigned to specific customers, areas or types of projects and use your customized sequence when running a single task.
