I've been trying out SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Beta for about 3 weeks now, and can confirm that it has ironed out all the issues that cropped up when I was using the initial SDL Trados Studio 2009 release for the first time in the Summer. I have worked with it for many, many hours at a time and on big, big documents, typing fast, very fast. Ctrl+copy is always available. Insert/overwrite toggles nicely. “Find” does find things perfectly.

For me, it really was worth upgrading from SDL Trados 2007 Suite to SDL Trados Studio 2009: AutoSuggest™ is great. I am impressed the way it comes up with the most appropriate words and little phrases in just the right context. And so quickly too!

I love the friendly editor view, especially after working with TagEditor for several years. "Go to" the next untranslated segment is really useful when you resume work. "Display all segments” with a certain word in the target/source is helpful when you want to find & replace a term at the same time as seeing its context. I find it useful to see wrong spellings being underlined as I work, and warning signs coming up if I've left extra spaces, before actually running the QA checks.

All these little details add up to greatly-enhanced productivity and explain why I will be staying with SDL Trados Studio 2009 from now on.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get hold of the SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Beta and have it installed in my test environment. I am happy to relate that in my case it has proven to be a very stable environment.

I am a big fan of the new interface, and the AutoSuggest™ and QuickPlace™ features have provided very intelligent suggestions during translation. This has resulted in a significant increase in translation speed and accuracy.

To my delight I have even felt confident enough to use the SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Beta to do some “live” translation. I have even submitted translations as bilingual .ttx files without the client being aware that I was working in SDL Trados Studio 2009.

I am looking forward to the final release of SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1, and once I have it, I will be using it for as many translations as possible.

As soon as I signed off after attending one of the SDL Trados Studio 2009 introduction webinars in early 2009, I thought to myself that this surely is what I really need and want now.

Having had my fair share of bi-di and Word-related issues with Translator Workbench and TagEditor, and having overcome most before encountering a new set of issues with Word 2007, it seemed that such an integrated, comprehensive interface as SDL Trados Studio 2009 offers must really be it – the ultimate CAT interface.

And I wasn’t disappointed.

Then came SP1 and indeed I am hooked for good. In fact, I’m really impressed with the new interface, and hardly look back at all – goodbye word macros! Indeed, it would be easy now to tell all those translators so afraid of CAT tools – try this wysiwyg interface and your world would change beyond recognition.

I’ve been waiting for this version for years. With its modern and attractive interface, well-structured menus, drag-and-drop editing, inline spell checking and the new preview feature, it’s a huge step forward.

For long-time Trados users, the new interface may seem a bit daunting. But surprisingly, it doesn’t take long at all to become accustomed to the new ways of doing things. By the end of the first week, I was already seeing a marked increase in my daily production.

Even so, after a few months of regular use, I’m still discovering details that either help me work faster, or easier, and often both. The more I use SDL Trados Studio 2009, the more I see how much thought was put into it. Between jobs, I actually miss SDL Trados Studio 2009!

If I had to pick a favorite among all the new features it would be the capability to use multiple translation memories. As a long-time Trados user, I have quite a collection of translation memories. Even early on, there was often the dilemma of which memory to use, especially when provided with a small but customer-specific memory. Do I use the customer-specific memory with just a few matches or my main translation memory with several?

Now I can use both, but setting a penalty for my main memory so that matches in the customer-specific memory always come up at the top of the list. With the penalty feature, customer-specific memories are also prioritized when making concordance searches.

Having worked closely with the development team in testing the first Studio service patch, I’m confident that Studio will only get better. As with any new piece of software, there will be rough edges here and there, but it’s obvious that the will and the resources are there to make this the dream tool for translators.

SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 supports 3 machine translation engines that are available over an internet connection – SDL Enterprise Translation Server, SDL Language Weaver, and Google Translate. By default, these provide a free of charge, baseline (untrained) translation for generic rather than specific domains.

• The SDL service ensures that the text sent to it for translation is not shared, pooled, or used for any other purpose.
• Language Weaver provides a secure (HTTPS) connection to their service and anonymously uses the data it receives for Language Training.
• Language-pair support varies by machine translation engine.
• SDL Enterprise Translation Server is also available for hosted or on-site deployment that can be trained for a particular customer or domain.
• Language Weaver is also available on a Software-as-a-Service basis that can be trained for a particular customer or domain.

What new file formats does SDL Trados Studio SP3 support?

SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 features native support for the new Adobe ICML format. This is the new format from Adobe to replace the INX file format for InCopy. In addition, SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 now offers support for Microsoft Office 2010, including Word 2010, Excel 2010 and PowerPoint 2012. The existing filters already present in SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 have also been enhanced.

Can I now open packages from SDL's Enterprise translation management systems?

Yes. SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 allows you to open translation packages from SDL TMS 2007, SDL WorldServer 9.2 and SDL TeamWorks 2008.

SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 allows the user to carry out the required translation memory conversion process on the fly. Please note that there is no live connection to any of the server-based translation memory or resources provided in SDL TMS 2007, SDL WorldServer 9.2 or SDL TeamWorks 2008. All resources need to be included in the package in the form of project translation memories or termbases.

How do I install SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3?

Are you an existing SDL Trados Studio 2009 customer? Follow the steps below to download SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 and SDL MultiTerm 2009 SP3:

1. Exit SDL Trados Studio 2009 and SDL MultiTerm 2009, as well as close any Microsoft Office applications
2. Login to your SDL Account
3. Click the "Download" button by the SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 image on your right on the home page - this will take you to the "My Downloads" area
4. Once in the "My Downloads" section, you will see that your SDL Trados Studio 2009 download is clearly marked in red ("SP3 - Now Available)
5. Expand the new SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 product name and you will find the SP3 downloads within:
   - SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3
   - SDL MultiTerm 2009 SP3
6. Click "Download" on each and save the executable files and save them to your local hard disk
7. Once the downloads have been completed, run both executable files one at a time and follow the wizard driven process
   The SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3 installer will detect the original SDL Trados Studio 2009 software and uninstall it in the background before installing SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP3.
