Extending the Use of Your S1000D Structured Content
with David Smith, Technical Documentation Lead, Lockheed Martin

One of the key tenets of XML is extensibility. As a highly customizable XML specification, S1000D can be tailored to extend the use of your structured content beyond traditional technical documentation projects. This presentation covers:
  • Planning an S1000D project to support extended use of your structured data, including multimedia and training applications
  • Utilizing the LiveContent API to retrieve technical data from an IETM and integrate it with your system and other external applications
  • Utilizing Flash-based custom viewers to extend multimedia capabilities

David Smith has over 27 years of experience in the information technology industry, including experience in IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual) development, training, instructional design, data modeling, IETM databases, and programming. Dave holds an M. S. in Instructional Technology and is currently serving as a Technical Documentation Lead for multiple S1000D projects at Lockheed Martin. Dave also serves as the lead of the Viewer task team for the SWFTS S1000D IPT.

Recorded at SDL's Ask An S1000D Expert Tour event on November 15, 2011 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Chantilly, VA.
