For many years, translation memory technology (retaining and reusing prior translations in repetitive applications) has been a cornerstone of translation activities. So much so that translation memories are considered corporate assets, whose ownership is retained by the service client as intellectual property. The same is true of terminology bases, and, to a lesser degree, the dictionaries used in conjunction with machine translation software.
