SDL extends Global Information Management capabilities with acquisition of PASS Engineering

SDL to add PASSOLO visual software localization solution to its suite of GIM products to enable companies to streamline global product lifecycle management

SDL, the leading provider of Global Information Management (GIM) solutions, today announced the acquisition of PASS Engineering, the developers of the highly acclaimed visual software localization tool PASSOLO.

Introducing products to global markets is one of the key challenges being faced by organizations. This acquisition further enables global businesses to reduce the time, effort and cost of creating multilingual content for the global markets.

The SDL acquisition of PASSOLO will further strengthen the company’s leadership position in Global Information Management by adding a world class visual localization tool to the existing SDL solutions portfolio. By leveraging existing Translation Memories and corporate Terminology, SDL PASSOLO will drive significant improvements in efficiencies and consistency into software, online help and user documentation localization processes. PASSOLO is the industry leader in support for localization of Microsoft .NET applications, which is increasingly becoming the worldwide de-facto web software development platform, used by many companies to deliver customer facing web-based applications.

“Localization of software has its own unique challenges,” says Keith Mills, President of SDL Technology. “By integrating PASSOLO into the SDL TMS and the SDL Trados desktop solutions, our customers will improve their localization efficiency by leveraging translation memory, terminology management and software and documentation visual editing.  Many of our customers have had difficulty with software localization in the past and have had to buy different tools and run a dual stream documentation and software localization process. Corporations will now have one system which shares and leverages software and documentation content. Additionally, Language Service Providers (LSPs) will now benefit from being able to accept virtually any client project, ensuring high-quality and consistency of deliverables.”

“We are delighted with today’s announcement,” says Florian Sachse, founder and co-Managing Director of PASS Engineering. “The combination of PASSOLO visual software localization and SDL technology will offer companies a unique capability that enables greater efficiencies in software and documentation localization, and allow customers to drive terminology consistency across the translation supply chain. We can now add the software component to the recently-launched SDL translation package system, which exchanges content throughout the translation supply chain; software localization is the final piece in this jigsaw.”
