SDL announces contract with Canon Business Machines

SDL delivers multilingual content management for Canon Europe Web Self-Service Support (CEWSS) system

Maidenhead , United Kingdom
27 January 2004

SDL International (London Stock Exchange: 'SDL'), the world's leading provider of multilingual service and software solutions, announced today that Canon Europe will implement a new localization and translation solution for its consumer online self-help system, which will feature SDL's leading Globalization Management software, SDLWorkFlow.

Canon Europe has made a substantial investment in producing a multilingual online customer support system (to help reduce phone calls to their Help Desk Centre) and SDL International were invited to provide a solution to automate the translation and localization process.

Being able to adapt to Canon's customer support system, SDLWorkFlow automatically identifies new and modified support documents requiring translation. The documents are packaged and transferred to SDLWorkFlow using SDL's XML based messaging protocol. Integrated Translation Memory technology is applied automatically to the new content, reducing both translation effort and cost. The translation is completed and reviewed using a workflow defined within SDLWorkFlow by Canon. On completion, the translated documents are automatically returned to Canon's customer support system ready for publication. This high level of automation reduces the administrative overhead usually associated with managing frequent updates in multiple languages and dramatically reduces Canon's involvement in the translation management process.

As Charles Farimoyo, Canon's General Manager said, "Return on investment is delivered through reduced project management costs and SDL's Translation Memory technology leveraging previously translated content. Time-to-market is also improved through the combination of automated identification of documents requiring translation, automatic Translation Memory usage and use of defined workflows."

Keith Mills, SDL's Chief Technical Officer confirmed, "This is a very attractive investment for Canon, in which they expect to be able to make substantial reductions in their overall translation costs, as they build up translation memory assets. The output from the translation workflow process will enhance the effectiveness of their Customer Support capability."
