SDL, the leading provider of Global Information Management (GIM) solutions, announced today that the European Institute of Romania (EIR) relied on SDL to streamline the country’s accession to the European Union. Working to strict and unmovable deadlines, this public institution has used SDL technology to manage the terminology contained within the voluminous Acquis Communautaire, the extensive documentation which outlines the common rights and obligations which bind all the Member States within the EU. By standardizing EU legislative terminology in Romanian, the Translation Coordination Unit of the EIR was able to accelerate the completion of the Acquis, maximize the accuracy and consistency of target texts, and make a significant contribution of validated terms to the general public.
Today, the EIR’s SDL MultiTerm® database contains more than 54,000 term entries. Acting as a centralized repository in more than 8 languages, the technology has also enabled the EIR to utilize it as a workflow tool, allowing experts within line ministries to review and formally approve more than half of 23,300 validated terms entries. As soon as a protocol is signed by the EIR and the European institutions, these validated term entries will be delivered to the IATE (Inter-Active Terminology for Europe), the common database used by the EU institutions and available to the general public, free of charge.
“Consistent use of terminology has a crucial role to play at every stage of our global information management lifecycle. The same concept must be used in all documents relating to the Acquis, even though it may include words that span different types of information,” says Laura Vrabie, Director of the TCU. “With SDL MultiTerm in place as our centralized terminology repository, the TCU can do their work faster, more efficiently and more accurately.”
