SDL International, a leading provider of globalization solutions has today announced a new release of Enterprise Translation Server, Version 5, with further advances in linguistic and user functionality.

 Improvement of translation quality:

Enterprise Translation Server Version 5 will ship with updated rules and dictionary files for all language directions. SDL has also made significant improvements to the foreign-language to English modules, particularly, French/English, Spanish/English, Italian/English and Portuguese/English.

In addition, core dictionaries have been considerably expanded, particularly bi-directional English/French, bi-directional English/German, English/Spanish and Portuguese/English.

More than 12,500 additional entries have been included within the core dictionaries, together with more than 1,000 new core phrases. SDL has also completed a cycle of the most thorough linguistic regression testing that the engine has seen since in recent years.

Server Functionality:

Administration and translation privileges are now assignable by username and password or by IP address, with tracking of usage possible per user and per language direction. This feature facilitates the use of Enterprise Translation Server within an Application Service Provider model.

Remote dictionary editing, already a major competitive advantage of the system, permits the checking in and out of dictionaries from the server for local editing.

Already one of the easiest software systems to integrate within corporate networks, Version 5 features an improved 'COM object', to allow easier integration of translation capability into business applications.

Commenting on Version 5, Keith Mills, Director of Technology said "SDL has delivered on its promise to the business community at the time of our acquisition of this leading technology twelve months ago. Enterprise Translation Server now has the capacity to energize an organization's international communications, at the heart of its network infrastructure."

About Real time translation

Real-time translation systems are linguistically sophisticated machine translation (MT) products programmed with comprehensive dictionaries and a collection of linguistic rules that translate one language into another without relying on human translators. An MT system interprets the structure of sentences in the source language (the language the user is translating from) and generates a translation based on the rules of the target language (the language the user is translating to). The process involves breaking down complex and varying sentence structures, identifying parts of speech, resolving ambiguities, and synthesizing the information into the components and structure of the new language.
