Habitat for Humanity

habitatforhumanityHabitat for Humanity builds, renovates and rehabilitates simple, decent and accessible homes for families in need, with the help of volunteers and community resources. HFH has built over 800,000 homes, benefiting 4 million people in 80 countries.

Mission and Values

Habitat for Humanity's mission:
1)  To champion decent housing as a human right.
2)  Mobilise and support communities to implement projects that help people in housing need to claim their housing rights, create access to and overcome barriers to safe, decent and appropriate housing. This usually takes the form of a community-led construction, renovation or new build project.
3)  Make housing poverty and homelessness a matter of conscience and action so that it becomes unacceptable in every nation on earth.

Ali Coldwell in Kyrgyzstan - October 2016

RayanaAli Coldwell made the long trip to Kyrgyzstan to help Habitat for Humanity international build an earthquake resistant eco-home. The house was being built for the Mamyrkanov family, including their adorable children, Nuraly, Soumaya, Nurkasym and baby Rayana, and Mum and Dad worked alongside the volunteers to help build their new home. She helped to prepare local materials (wood, straw, mud and sand), to construct reinforced steel bar beam cages, to build a room, and to insulate the new house so it could cope with the region’s harsh winters. Well done Ali!

Cluj Build - September 2014

SDLVolunteershabitatA total of 73 volunteers from the SDL Cluj office worked for 6 days in September to build a house for a socially disadvantaged Romanian family. The selected family have been involved with the project from the beginning, as have local community volunteers.

“Feeling that you can help and be part of that family’s dream and feeling that your contribution has a significant impact on the community created a positive atmosphere and energy all around. I noticed during the week that it wasn’t just volunteering work. It turned out to be a great team-building exercise where everybody acted as one team - being proud of themselves, each other, and especially of the company.” Adrian Gocan, Manager of the Cluj office.
